Louise Kay
Head of Learning for Communication

I have been with Mary Rose since it opened in September 2006 on the old Futcher School site and then since February 2007 at on the Mary Rose site. I have really enjoyed my time at Mary Rose where I find that no two days are the same.

I am married with 2 grown up children and a dog.  My son has just got married and bought a house on the Isle of Wight  so lots of our leisure time is spent on the IOW supporting him and his wife with DIY.  As well as DIY my husband and I spend time travelling in our motor home with the dog visiting lots of different places in the UK.

I have worked as a class teacher all over the school, in primary and secondary and now in 6th form.  Along with being class teacher I have responsibility for communication. I work closely with our speech and language therapists to make sure that each pupil has a voice.  I have supported pupils to use VOCAs (voice output communication Aids), high tech communication aids and low tech communication books.  I have also presented at Communication Matters which is a

UK-wide organisation that supports people of all ages who find it hard to communicate because they have little or no clear speech.

Mary Rose Academy is a brilliant place to work, the pupils are amazing and I have learnt so much from each and every one of them.  I work with the most complex of pupils and it’s an honour to see them overcome so many of the obstacle they face and develop the skills they need to progress.  The school is a happy place to work and I am always amazed at how the staff and pupils support each other and make every day an adventure.
