On 16th July two members of staff from the Mary Rose Academy left the UK for an exciting visit to our partner school in Ghana. The School, New Horizon Special School, is very similar to Mary Rose in terms of the pupils it caters for. Both Jess and Caroline found that it became more than just a school over the two weeks they were there.
Unfortunately in Ghana the special educational needs schools do not receive any public funding, meaning all parents have to pay expensive school fees or volunteer at the school. New Horizon School relies on donations and fundraising to continue to provide education for these children and support for their families. As its strapline says, “no child should be left behind”.
New Horizon School were overwhelmed with the generosity of gifts and support from the staff and students at Mary Rose Academy and are trying to plan their next visit to our school, having enjoyed their previous trip to the UK!
During their time in Ghana Jess and Caroline were also lucky enough to visit a specialist school for children with autism and a residential school for those with special needs and children with no home. New Horizon School works closely with The Autism Awareness Centre and Echoing Hills Specialist Residential School, who also receive no public funding.
Both the girls had a fantastic time and have made plans to go back and volunteer in Ghana. Everyone they met was so friendly and made their experience an unforgettable one.
Thank you for all the support and donations we received for the children in Ghana. We’ve been able to see the fantastic difference it has made to so many lives.
